the deer bowed first

a deer bowed at me, so i bowed back. then she tried to eat my map.
the path up to the shrine wound through hundreds of old stone lanterns, every one of them wearing a little hat of moss, and deer just drifted between them like they owned the place. apparently the deer here are messengers of the gods, which explains the attitude.
this one looked like she worked there. a little shrine maiden, keeping an eye on the lanterns and checking everyone who came through. i passed, i think. after she'd checked my map.
she walked with me for a while after that. i don't think she wanted anything. i think she just liked the company. same.
