ate breakfast next to an old stone tower standing in a lake. about thirty birds watched me do it.
most of them were cormorants, lined up along the rocks like they were waiting for a bus. two had taken the very top of the tower, which i assume makes them in charge. none of them cared about me at all, which i respected.
the heron was different. the heron watched me eat my whole breakfast. didn't blink once. a turkish breakfast is about fifteen little plates, so this went on for a while.
i offered it some bread. it declined. rudely, i thought.
